Benefits of Seeing a Psychologist
There are many benefits to seeing a psychologist:

-
Improved Self-Awareness- Therapy helps to clarify your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, so that you gain a better understanding of yourself. In therapy your relationship with yourself and those around you are explored so that patterns can be identified, leading to a better understanding of behaviours that are getting in your way.
-
Improved Relationships- In therapy you can learn effective communication techniques to deepen the connection with your loved ones. Therapy can also help you establish your personal boundaries and develop your capacity for empathy to reduce the intensity and frequency of conflict.
-
Learn Coping Strategies- Psychologists can teach you strategies to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, conflict, life changes, grief and other mental health challenges so that you feel equipped to handle any situation. This helps to build your resilience.
-
Meaning and Purpose- Therapy can help you to develop meaning and purpose in your life, especially if you are feeling lost or hopeless.
-
Healing From Trauma- Therapy can help you understand, process and heal from trauma.
-
Change Your Behaviours- Therapy can help you establish better routines and help you stick to your goals.
-
Increase Self-Esteem- Therapy provides an opportunity to identify your strengths and abilities so that you can start feeling better about yourself.
-
Personal Growth- Therapy can help you to grow as a person, develop life skills and foster opportunities for positive change.
Why Choose Us
At Domingo Psychology, you will feel seen, heard and validated. We offer an inviting, relaxed and calm environment for you to tell your story. We are a small clinic and we value each and every client. You will notice a feeling of being connected and having your story truly heard. Our care is highly personalized and individual, you are not just another number through the door.
We offer emotional safety, a place to absolutely be yourself, where you can be sure that you will not be judged. We believe therapy is an act of self-care and when you are welcomed to our small clinic, you will feel valued and understood.
Our approach is holistic and is not simply aimed at symptom reduction. We explore thoughts, feelings, behaviours and the self (mind, heart, body and soul) within the biological, familial, social, cultural and political contexts in which we live. All these factors are considered.

We work to uncover unconscious drives and fears so that they can become integrated with the self. Through this integration, you begin to live authentically. Your family of origin story as well as past traumas are addressed to understand how you view yourself, those you love and the world around you. Through the therapeutic process, you gain insight and learn skills to help support your mental health, your sense of self and to nurture your relationships.

how does therapy work?
what to expect in the first meeting

We offer many treatment options to create a bespoke plan that meets your unique needs and specific goals. Most sessions run for 50 minutes and usually happen weekly for the first three weeks. The first session will involve some administration and an assessment process. You may be asked to fill out some questionnaires during the intake process. Typically some goals are established. Zenobia will explain the types of interventions that may be useful and may give you some homework to complete. It is useful to bring along a note-book or journal, to record any insights and to note down any work to be completed between sessions. After the initial three sessions, a fortnightly schedule is usually appropriate.
who might benefit
& what are some of the therapies available?

We work with people from all walks of life and from many different backgrounds.

It may be the case that life has become stressful because some major change has occurred. Or perhaps you have experienced a recent or past traumatic event. Maybe you are starting to worry about your mood, or are experiencing symptoms that concern you. Perhaps you have unresolved anger, grief or sadness because of past events, or you are finding it hard to move forward with your goals. It may be the case that you are experiencing some problems in your relationships and would like to learn some strategies to help with communication or conflict resolution. Or you may want to work on your performance at work or university to optimise your skills and facilitate your personal growth. People come to therapy for a range of different reasons.

-
Therapies include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), where we focus on challenging unhelpful thinking styles, creating behaviour change and learning new skills.
-
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) teaches us how to regulate and manage our emotions and create lasting, meaningful relationships. It teaches evidenced-based skills and incorporates mindful living.
-
Schema Therapy identifies broad, pervasive themes we hold about ourselves that are developed during childhood and adolescence which are dysfunctional and aims to change these beliefs.
-
Eye Movement Desensitization Re-processing (EDMR) can release traumatic memories, making them easier to incorporate into our brains. Somatic-based therapies connect mind with body and can be extremely helpful in treating trauma.
Other therapies include:
-
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
-
Existential Therapy
