People see a psychologist for all kinds of reasons.

  • Perhaps you are struggling with racing thoughts, over-thinking, worry, rumination, panic or feelings of dread. These symptoms are common in Anxiety Disorders. Therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) and EMDR can help in a number of ways, depending on the nature of your situation.

In the first session we will complete a thorough assessment of the important factors that relate to your symptoms, we may talk about your history of anxiety, when and where your symptoms are present. The idea of this assessment is to guide into choosing the right type of therapy.

  • We may use CBT to target unhelpful thinking styles such as 'catastrophizing', 'predicting the future' or 'black and white thinking'. Or we may use DBT to learn emotional regulation skills and mindfulness. Perhaps EMDR would be more suitable if it is a particular memory that seems to trigger your anxiety.

  • Perhaps you are feeling unmotivated, lacking in energy, feeling hopeless or apathetic. These symptoms are common in Depression. After completing your assessment we may use CBT to create behaviour change which will then improve your mood, or begin a mood diary to help you understand your depression better.

  • Perhaps you have experienced a loss in your life and are grieving. Grief and loss therapy can help you understand your grief reaction, make peace with those you have lost, and create meaning around your loss so that you can move beyond your grief.

  • People often come to a psychologist because of relationship problems, perhaps with their spouse or partner, or their children or parents, problems with work colleagues. In this is case we can learn skills to better communicate our needs, to actively listen to others, to respect personal boundaries or establish negotiations to help improve interpersonal relationships.

  • Perhaps you have have experienced some traumatic event in your past or present. In Counselling Psychology we would use trauma-focused interventions and somatic processing to lessen the impact of the trauma and to move beyond the pain. EMDR and Schema Therapy can be extremely effective in healing trauma.

  • Big life changes such as divorce, immigration, children leaving home, retirement, unemployment, or health issues can lead to uncertainty, a need to re-evaluate ourselves, our relationships and our goals. All of these issues can be worked through in therapy.

There is no one size fits all when it comes to your mental health. You deserve a plan that is especially designed to meet your needs. We will take the time to fully understand your situation and what you want to gain out of treatment. You will be involved and active throughout this process.
